The Institute of Animal Science (ICA) was founded in 1965 and since then it has been studying feeding alternatives, management and animal genetics for Cuba and the tropical region. This institution is part of the complex of the Agrarian University of Havana Fructuoso Rodríguez. It is located on Carretera Central, km 47½ from Havana city. It has laboratories with equipment for works on biochemistry, physiology, evaluation for new feeds, analytic chemistry, microbiology and tissue culture. The Institute of Animal Science has 75 high qualified researchers; out of them 44 representing 58.7% are PhD. They conduct different research on the integral development of Cuban cattle production. Special attention has been paid to the recent biotechnological progresses of new feeds for cattle, as well as those addressed to the obtainment of new clones of pastures and forages. Also, computer programs have designed for their application in the animal management and feeding.

The staff of the Institute is composed of 560 workers. Among them, 75 are researchers, out of them 29 are senior researchers, 16 associate, 16 assistant and 25 young researchers.
